About This Product
Overview
Modelled on the mimic chest from fantasy games, this is a playful piece with a moving mechanism. Suited to fantasy fans, desktop display and gifting as a small surprise.
Design
The body is a wooden chest: dark brown and tan pieces build the plank grain, with metal corner guards and rivets on all four sides and a clasp on the front. The lid stands half open, fangs and a wide round eye emerging from inside, with a tongue-like structure within — unmistakably a mimic.
Highlights
The mechanism is the heart of the piece: the lid opens and closes, and the fangs and eye are revealed as it lifts, creating the moment a chest turns into a monster. The plank grain comes from thin plates in graded tones, while the metal corner guards use smooth dark grey parts for a clear contrast in texture.
Story
The mimic comes from the tabletop role-playing tradition: a monster disguised as a treasure chest, lying in wait to punish the greedy. The idea has become a classic of fantasy culture.
Details
The lid is hinged and holds at a half-open angle, so the mimic pose can be displayed long term. Small items can be kept inside. The size suits one-handed handling, and it works as a desk ornament.
